The Framework Knitters Museum, in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, is a record of the living and working conditions of a Framework Knitting factory from the 19th Century. It is an incredible experience to be able to volunteer in a museum with such rich history, and fascinating to think of those who have worked, and produced knitted pieces from the time.
During my time at the museum, I will be learning to use centuries old knitting machinery, and sharing my passion of the history of the knitwear industry with visitors. This experience will further develop my knowledge of historical knitting techniques.
My training has begun on the circular knitting machines, and have found lots of interesting manuals online dating back to late 1800s. These instruction manuals have taught me the engineering behind the machines, how to achieve textured stitches, and many different stockings patterns. I have found it interesting to use the old techniques with my Brother domestic knitting machine, to see what results you can achieve.
